September Weather in Kent 2026: A Complete Guide & What to Wear
September in Kent is often referred to as the month of “Indian Summers.” It’s a beautiful, transitional time where you can still feel the warmth of the sun, but the mornings start to carry that fresh, autumnal crispness. For many locals, this is the best month of the year; the summer crowds have vanished, the light turns a beautiful golden hue, and the county’s famous harvest is in full swing.
If you’re visiting Kent in September, you’re in for a treat—just be ready for the days to start drawing in.

What’s the September weather like?
September is generally a very pleasant and mild month. The average daytime highs sit around 19°C (66°F), though it is not uncommon to have “warm spells” where temperatures climb back up to 22°C or 23°C. Nighttime temperatures begin to cool down more noticeably, averaging around 11°C (52°F), which makes for excellent sleeping weather.
The humidity drops from its August peak, making the air feel clearer and “zingier.” While the sea is at its warmest at the start of the month (around 17°C), the coastal winds can start to pick up, reminding you that autumn is on the way. October weather, that follows can be also surprisingly warm and both months are one of my favourite months to set for a long day hike in the countryside.
Average temperatures in September
September weather is usually split into two halves: the “lingering summer” and the “early autumn.”
- At the beginning of September: Highs are typically 20°C to 21°C. You can often still enjoy t-shirt weather well into the afternoon.
- By the middle of the month: Temperatures steady at around 19°C. The sun still feels warm, but you’ll find yourself looking for a jumper once you step into the shade.
- Toward the end of September: Highs drop to 17°C or 18°C. The first “real” autumn breezes start to arrive, and the evenings feel significantly cooler.

September daylight
The most dramatic change in September is the loss of daylight. We lose nearly two hours of sun over the course of the month, and the Autumn Equinox (around September 22nd) marks the point where day and night are equal in length.

Humidity, Wind, and Fog
- Humidity: Hovers around 75%. It feels much less “heavy” than August, but the morning dew is much heavier, often leaving the grass soaking wet until mid-morning.
- Wind: Can be variable. You might get calm, still “Equinox” days, or the first of the autumn gales blowing in from the Atlantic.
- Fog: Morning mist becomes a classic September feature in Kent. The sight of mist rising off the Medway or the Stour river is iconic this time of year.

Average rain weather forecast in September
September is moderately dry, with an average of 55mm to 60mm of rain. It typically rains on about 10 to 12 days. The rainfall shifts from the thundery downpours of summer to more organized, lighter “autumnal” rain bands, though you can still get a final summer storm early in the month.
Average sun days in September
You can expect about 5 hours of bright sunshine per day. While the days are shorter, September often has very clear skies. You can expect about 10 “perfect” sunny days, often with that deep blue sky that only happens in autumn.
How to read the local weather forecast
- The “Equinoctial Gales”: Keep an ear out for this term. Around the end of the month, the changing seasons can cause a period of very windy weather.
- UV Index: Drops to a 3 or 4 (Moderate). You’re less likely to burn, but if you’re out on the water or the chalk cliffs, the reflection can still be strong.

What to Wear in Kent in September
September is the ultimate month for layering. You might start the day in a coat and end it in a t-shirt.
- The Outer Layer: A lightweight trench coat, a quilted vest (gilet), or a sturdy denim jacket.
- The Mid-Layer: A light wool jumper or a long-sleeved cotton top.
- Footwear: Trainers are still fine for the town, but if you’re heading into the orchards or woods, the morning dew can make the ground slippery. A pair of water-resistant ankle boots is a smart choice.
What to pack for your Kent trip
- A Scarf: A light, fashionable scarf is perfect for when the sun goes down.
- Sunglasses: The sun sits lower in the sky in September, which can cause significant glare when driving or walking east-to-west.
- Compact Umbrella: For those unpredictable transitional showers.
- Moisturiser: As the air gets dryer and the winds pick up, your skin might feel it!

What does Kent’s nature look like in September?
- The Hop Harvest: This is the most famous part of Kentish heritage. Look for the “Hopping” festivals and the smell of drying hops coming from the oast houses.
- Orchards: Apples and pears are everywhere. The trees are heavy with fruit, and many farms offer “Pick Your Own” sessions for the late-season varieties or you can buy local fruit at regular farmer’s markets through Kent.
- Vineyards: There are over 50 vineyards in Kent, and the grapes are now nearly ready to be harvested. It’s the perfect time to take a guided (or self-guided!) tour of the vineyards and taste the last year produce at the same time.
- Spiders’ Webs: On misty mornings, the hedgerows are covered in thousands of dew-soaked webs—it’s a photographer’s dream.
- The Turn: Toward the end of the month, the trees start their first subtle shift from green to gold and bronze.
Historic weather data in September
- Record Heat: In September 2023, Kent saw a freak heatwave with temperatures at Faversham hitting 33.5°C (92°F)—the hottest day of that entire year!
- Indian Summers: It is very common for Kent to have a “mini-summer” in the first two weeks of September, often staying warmer than the June weather that year.
