April Weather in Kent 2026: A Complete Guide & What to Wear
April in Kent is a bit of a tease! It’s the month where you finally feel like you can put the winter coat firmly in the back of your wardrobe, only to find yourself reaching for it again when a “Scandi-high” blows a chilly breeze across the channel. But, it is also the month when the “Garden of England” truly earns its nickname. The orchards are heavy with white and pink blossom, and the woodlands start to turn that magical shade of blue as the short bluebell season starts.

April in Kent is generally mild and much warmer than March weather, but very changeable. You’ll often hear us talking about “April showers”—these are quick, sharp bursts of rain that can appear out of nowhere on a perfectly sunny day. The average daytime temperature jumps up to a much more comfortable 13°C (55°F), though on a really clear, calm day, it can feel like 17°C or 18°C in the sun.
At night, it’s still quite fresh, with temperatures averaging around 5°C (41°F). We do still get the occasional ground frost, especially in rural spots like the Weald or near Ashford, so gardeners are usually still being careful with their plants!
This is a fantastic time for “shoulder season” travel. The heritage railways, like the Kent & East Sussex Railway, are back in full swing, and the castle gardens are a riot of colour, all without the peak-summer humidity or crowds.
Average temperatures in April
April is the bridge between the chilly early spring and the warmth of May weather. You’ll notice the temperature climbing steadily throughout the month and it’s usually much warmer than the weather in March.
- At the beginning of April: Highs are usually around 11°C. It can still feel quite wintry if the wind is coming from the North or East.
- By the middle of the month: Temperatures tend to settle around 13°C. This is often when we get a settled “warm spell” where everyone heads to the coast for the first ice cream of the year.
- Toward the end of April: Highs often reach 15°C, and the sun starts to feel genuinely warm on your back.

Believe it or not, it actually snows more often in April in the UK than it does in November! However, don’t panic—in Kent, this usually just means a few minutes of “slushy” flakes that melt before they even hit the pavement.
Actual, settling snow in April is very rare (though not impossible, as the “Beast from the East” has shown us in the past). Most years, you won’t see a single flake.

- Humidity: Drops to around 71%. The air feels much dryer and crisper than the “damp” cold of January few months ago.
- Wind: April can be blustery, but the winds are generally lighter than the March gales. Average speeds are around 10–12 mph.
- Fog: Rare in April. You might get a bit of early morning mist over the orchards, which looks stunning, but it usually burns off by 9:00 a.m.

It’s the kind of weather where you’re constantly putting your umbrella up and down. My advice? Don’t let a “rainy” forecast stop your plans; usually, a sunny spell is only 20 minutes away.

We get a lot more Vitamin D in April, with an average of 5 to 6 hours of sunshine a day. You can expect roughly 8 to 10 days that are mostly clear and sunny. Because the air is so clean and there’s less haze, the sky often looks a very deep, bright blue.

- Bluebells: Toward the end of the month, ancient woods like Sissinghurst or Hole Park turn into a sea of violet-blue. It is one of the most beautiful sights in England.
- Fruit Blossom: The “Garden of England” puts on its best show. The cherry, apple, and pear orchards around Faversham are covered in delicate white and pink blossom and there are plenty of other places where to see blossom in Kent.
- Tulips: Places like Hever Castle & Gardens, Emmetts Gardens or Leeds Castle have incredible tulip displays in April, with thousands of flowers in every colour imaginable.

- The Warmest April: In 2011, Kent enjoyed a record-breaking April with temperatures hitting 25°C to 27°C over the Easter weekend!
- The “Late Frost”: Every few years, we get a sharp frost in late April that worries the fruit farmers. In 2021, we had a very “sparkly” and cold April with many frosty mornings.
- Storm Hannah (2019): Reminded us that April can still pack a punch, bringing gusts of over 60 mph to the South East.
